Karma. It is believed that every single thing you do would cause a proportional effect. Say, you help to pick up the rubbish on the street, next time you know, your mom cooks your favourite dinner. You refused to help a friend in homework, a day or two after, you happen to trip on the stairs. Karma right? It doesn't need lines to connect the relation between the two incidents. Whenever we do good deeds, the universe will somehow returns the favour. And it goes in vice versa. Karma is a bitch, but karma is also a saint.
Fair is fair, promoting good deeds through karma is not really the way to go. Imagine people expecting money comes flying to them when they help the old lady crosses the road. Imagine people expect themselves to grab the high position when they contribute something to a club. Or simpler, expecting the word of "thank you" when helping a friend, or from a cashier over the counter. We are somehow expecting the karma to happen. Being polite is of course, a good practise. But again, which one is to be cultured, the cycle of karma, or sincerity?
We're just confused. I believe the parents have thought us right. "Son, what do you say to the lady who gives you sweets?" "Thank you!". For a culture to be condensed in a society, a force needed to be done in the first place. A force would become a habit. But what if along the way, a habit becomes a rule? That urge to repay the kindness of other people towards us. Some say it's good, it shows appreciation. But some take it differently, believing that nice people always have a motive or secret agenda. Or in other words, believing that the act of kindness should not be commenced unless they have something to ask for.
No culture nor race nor country is exempted for this mentality, they way of thinking is. As much as we expect people to return the kindness and all, we should always remember, expectations are just overrated. 'Till what extend would people be nice back at you? This is when sincerity should come in action. The thought of doing good things just to satisfy own self works all the time. No pressure, no expectation, no disappointment. Be nice to other people because it's the polite thing to do, and human beings deserved to be treated gently, stranger or not. The fact that we don't know their past makes us have to be nicer even more. We don't know their past, their stories, and what they are capable of. Kindness shows that good people still exist. It doesn't hurt to be nice, but it does hurt without the presence of sincerity.
A better world consists of better people with of course, better way of thinking. Act of kindness is a domino effect, so why wait up?
